The Old Guard 2 has officially begun production!

Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne were spotted on the set of the upcoming Netflix film on Friday (June 17) in Rome, Italy.

Also joining the leading ladies was Chiwetel Ejiofor, who appeared in the original film with them.

The first movie had an end credits scene that teased a sequel and we’re so excited to find out what happens next. Not much is known about the plot so far, but make sure to look back at the details from the first movie’s ending to get a sense of what’s to come.

The Old Guard followed a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries, led by a warrior named Andy (Theron), with a mysterious inability to die. The team has fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

There have been some new additions to the cast of The Old Guard 2.

According to Variety, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are set to star opposite Charlize Theron in the sequel to the hit Netflix movie.

Charlize Theron is sharing the plans for the sequel to The Old Guard!

Speaking briefly with Variety, the 45-year-old actress confirmed that the second film based on the graphic novel will be kicking off at the start of 2022.

Charlize also confirmed that Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will be back for the film as well.

If you don’t know, The Old Guard focused on a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries.

It feels like a no-brainer at this point that Netflix will be making a sequel to Charlize Theron‘s movie The Old Guard, but fans might be waiting a while for it to happen.

The action film debuted earlier this month and Netflix already revealed that it will become one of the most-watched films ever on the streaming service. (Find out where it ranks on the Top 10!)

Deadline is now reporting that “fans of the first film shouldn’t expect another installment any time soon.” This is all because of Charlize‘s busy schedule.

Charlize is scheduled to film a sequel to her 2017 movie Atomic Blonde and she has avoided doing action-heavy films back-to-back in the past because of the physical training involved.

The outlet also reports that contract negotiations with Charlize might be complicated as big stars will seek out large salaries from the streaming service. This is because there are no back-end profits on Netflix like there are on theatrical releases.
