Megan Rapinoe Shares an Emotional Goodbye to USWNT Before Her Retirement

Megan Rapinoe is officially saying goodbye.

The 38-year-old soccer player shared an emotional post following the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s loss to Sweden, kicking them out of the running for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“This game is so beautiful, even in its cruelest moments,” she began.

2 USWNT Soccer Stars Are Officially Retiring After World Cup Defeat & 1 Surprisingly Is Not!

The USWNT, aka United States women’s national soccer team, is officially out of the running for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a weekend defeat against Sweden.

While many fans were hoping for a three-peat for the team to achieve, it’s not the case this year.

Following their defeat, two members of the soccer team have officially announced their retirement from the sport, and there’s one who was rumored to be hanging up her cleats as well, but it doesn’t look like she actually is!

U.S. Women's National Team Loses to Sweden in Women's World Cup 2023, Worst World Cup Finish for USWNT

The U.S. women’s national team lost to Sweden in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup, crashing out of the competition over the weekend on Sunday (August 6).

Despite the U.S. having the advantage in possession and chances created, goalkeeper Zećira Mušović prevented USWNT players Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan from advancing. The game remained scoreless at full time and again after extra time, until Sweden advanced 5–4 on penalty kicks to move on to the quarterfinals.

This round-of-16 loss is the worst World Cup finish for the USWNT. Previously, third place was the U.S.’s worst finish, via Sports Illustrated.
