In the feature with The Sunday Times, Eddie shared that he would not have said yes to the role today.
“No, I wouldn’t take it on now. I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake,” he said. “The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don’t have a chair at the table. There must be a levelling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates.”
The Danish Girl centered on artist Einar Wegener/Lili, who, with support from wife Gerda, prepares to undergo one of the first sex-change operations.
Alicia Vikander, who played Gerda, won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar that year.
Eddie went on to win an Oscar for his role in The Theory of Everything.
