Salman Rushdie Stabbing Suspect Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder Charge

The man suspected in stabbing author Salman Rushdie has been arrested.

On Friday (August 12), the 75-year-old renowned author was attacked on stage moments before giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York.

Salman was rushed then rushed to the hospital with an apparent stab wound to the neck.

The day after the stabbing, 24-year-old Hadi Matar from Fairview, New Jersey was arrested for attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the second degree.

During a court appearance later that day, Matar pleaded not guilty, according to his public defender Nathanial Barone, CNN reports.

The defender went on to say that Matar has been “very cooperative” and communicating openly, but did not discuss the content of their conversations.

Matar was refused bail and remains in the Chautauqua County Jail. His next court appearance is on Friday, August 19.

While Salman remains in the hospital, his agent provided a distressing update on his condition.
