Salman Rushdie was attacked on stage moments before giving a lecture in western New York and his agent has provided a distressing update on his condition.

The 75-year-old Booker Prize-winning author was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution when a male suspect ran on stage and attacked both Rushdie and the interviewer.

Rushdie‘s agent Andrew Wylie provided an update to the New York Times on Friday evening.

“The news is not good,” the agent said, adding that Rushdie is currently on a ventilator and cannot speak. He was stabbed in the neck and abdomen.

The statement continued, “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.”

We’re hoping for a smooth recovery for Mr. Rushdie.
