Harvey Weinstein Has Been Granted An Appeal For 2020 Rape Conviction

Harvey Weinstein has been granted an appeal.

Nearly two and a half years after he was found guilty of rape and sexual assault, the 70-year-old former producer will have another chance at getting his conviction from his New York trials repealed.

According to the report, a court spokesperson said that Chief Judge Janet DiFore granted the appeal in the New York State of Appeals.

In 2020, Harvey was convicted of criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree. While he was acquitted on three other charges, the former convictions brought him 23 years in prison.

In a statement, Harvey still claims that he is innocent.

“I am so grateful to my attorneys for working hard and smart on this,” he shared with People. “Their hard work will help me prove my innocence in the end.”

An attorney for him, Arthur Aidala, added that they “are grateful that Chief Judge DiFiore acknowledged the substantial legal issues in this case and we are hopeful that the entire Court will find that Mr. Weinstein did not receive a fair trial and reverse his conviction.”

He adds, “Mr. Weinstein has consistently maintained his innocence.”

Harvey first sought the appeal in 2021.

Just last month, the first look at She Said, which centers on New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together uncovered Harvey‘s crimes, was released.
