Brittney Griner‘s defense team has officially filed an appeal of her conviction.

The 31-year-old WNBA player is a center for the Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She was sentenced to nine years by a Moscow court after vape canisters containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

Brittney Griner‘s lawyers are speaking out after she was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia.

The 31-year-old WNBA player was sentenced on charges of smuggling drugs into the country. She pled guilty to bringing less than one gram of cannabis oil into Russia, but said she had “no intents to break any Russian laws.”

Brittney‘s lawyers say that the nine-year prison sentence is nearly double what they were expecting her to receive.

The 79-year-old President of the United States issued a statement moments after Brittney Griner received a sentencing of nine years in prison in Russia.

The 31-year-old WNBA basketball star was convicted and sentenced on Thursday (August 4) of smuggling drugs with criminal intent. She has been officially sentenced to 9 years in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles ($16,280 dollars) by a Russian court.

Back in February, she was stopped at an airport in Russia and charged with trying to smuggle less than 1 gram of cannabis oil in her luggage.

American WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner has been convicted in a Russian court on Thursday (August 4) of smuggling drugs with criminal intent. She has been officially sentenced to 9 years in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles by a Russian court.

If you aren’t familiar with the case, back in February, the 31-year-old athlete was stopped at an airport in Russia and charged with trying to smuggle less than 1 gram of cannabis oil in her luggage.

In court today, Brittney was allowed to speak and gave an emotional speech to the judge, asking for leniency in her sentencing. She faced up to 10 years in a Russian prison. Prosecutors asked for a 9 1/2-year sentence.

WNBA's Brittney Griner Pleads Guilty to Charges in Russia, Faces Up to 10 Years in Prison

Brittney Griner is pleading guilty.

The 31-year-old two-time Olympic medalist and WNBA star entered the plea on Thursday (July 7), after being charged with smuggling drugs into Russia, via NPR.

She said she did bring cannabis products into the country, where it is illegal. However, she explained that she was quickly packing and “inadvertently” broke the law.

American Basketball Player Brittney Griner Reportedly Detained in Russia

WNBA player Brittney Griner has reportedly been detained in Russia.

According to a report from the New York Times on Saturday (March 5), the Russian Federal Customs Service alleged that vape cartridges were found in a luggage search that allegedly contained oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The customs service added that the person arrested was a player for the U.S. women’s team and did not specify the date of her arrest. They also released a video that appears to be of Brittney going through airport security.
