Football Player Michael Sam Officially Cut by St. Louis Rams

Michael Sam, who was recognized this year for being the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team, has been cut by the St. Louis Rams.

According to ESPN, the 24-year-old defensive end and seventh-round draft pick didn’t make the team after they had to trim their roster down to 53 players. Though, another team can still pick him up by Sunday (August 31), or if he goes unclaimed, he can sign up for the Rams‘ practice squad.

“I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career,” Michael tweeted. “The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I’ve always known. The journey continues.”

In case you didn’t know, Michael was selected back in May as the 249th pick out of 256 overall, which spawned an outpouring of love and support from celebrities and athletes alike.

The touching video of him learning he got drafted and kissing his boyfriend Vito Cammisano immediately went viral.
