Whoopi Goldberg Is Leaving 'Sister Act: The Musical' - Find Out Why!

The 65-year-old actress will not be appearing in an upcoming London revival of Sister Act: The Musical due to the postponement caused by the pandemic, Deadline reported Tuesday (February 16).

She is also a producer of the musical, and was set to reprise the role of Deloris Van Cartier role from the 1992 film, starring with Absolutely FabulousJennifer Saunders as Mother Superior.

She confirmed the news in a statement on the musical’s official website, citing “ongoing government restrictions resulting in a further delay to the production.” The musical was set to begin performances at London’s Eventim Apollo this July, but the opening has been pushed back a year to July of 2022.

“This necessary change of dates now means that Whoopi Goldberg will no longer be able to appear in the role of Deloris Van Cartier.”

Sister Act is near and dear to my heart and I’m disappointed that I will be unable to perform in this production under the circumstances. However, my producing partners and I will continue to work towards mounting a fantastic production, with an amazing new cast and we look forward to presenting it when it can be done safely for everyone onstage, behind the scenes and in the audience,” she said in the statement.

Disney has confirmed that Whoopi Goldberg will be reprising her role as Deloris in the upcoming movie Sister Act 3!

The movie will go directly to Disney+ as an exclusive film for the company’s streaming service.

The first Sister Act movie was released in 1992 and the sequel came out just one year later. We’ve been waiting a long time to learn more about Deloris’ story and we can’t wait for the next installment to the franchise!

Whoopi Goldberg Confirms 'Sister Act 3' Movie Is in the Works

Whoopi Goldberg has some big news!

The EGOT-winning Sister Act star made an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden on Tuesday night (October 6).

During their chat, Whoopi opened up about the possibility of a Sister Act 3.

“For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it. And then quite recently, it turns out, that that may not be true. People may want to see it. So we’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back,” she revealed.

“It’s fun and it feels good. And you know, nobody’s mad. It’s just, listen—bad singing, great singing, okay singing and then nuns. What’s better than that?” she went on to say of the beloved film series.

She also recently opened up about an ABC exec’s alleged racist commentary.

Whoopi Goldberg to Reprise 'Sister Act' Role in London Stage Show

Whoopi Goldberg will step back into the shoes of Deloris Van Cartier in the upcoming London production of the Sister Act stage musical!

The Oscar-winning actress and The View co-host played the role in the 1992 movie and the 1993 sequel. The show became a musical a decade ago and Patina Miller originated the role on stage.

Whoopi will play Deloris for one month only in the summer of 2020 opposite Ab Fab‘s Jennifer Saunders as Mother Superior.

“The original Deloris is back! A little older, a little seasoned, but really still kind of out there,” Whoopi said in a statement. Jennifer added, “I would buy tickets, but I can’t buy tickets because I’m in it. But I think this could be the event of the century. That’s all I’m saying, small thing, but THE event.”

Tickets for performances from July 29 through August 30 are on sale now.
