Here's The Meaning Behind The Title of Hulu's 'Only Murders In The Building'

Only Murders In The Building is an interesting title for a series, and showrunner John Hoffman is opening up about where it exactly came from.

In a new interview with The Wrap, it appears that Steve Martin, who stars as well as produces and also created the show with John, is to credit.

John explained that the title was “firmly in the mind of Steve Martin from the very beginning. He presented it to me and said, ‘I feel this has to be the title. I don’t know why, (but) this has to be the title.’”

He added that Steve “had very few insistent things when he first presented this idea. It was a very clean idea that we all jumped up and down about. But one of them was that the title be this. The other was that by the end of each season of the series that we answer who did it for the running season’s crime.”

At first, John was concerned about having “murder” in the actual title, too, saying that it caused “some concerns.”

However, the show “found to integrate it — and integrate the podcast idea into it — that it became charming in its own way. As Steve said — and I agree — it perks your ear up. You’re like, wait a minute, ‘What is that?’ You have to ask again when you hear the title. And he likes that, I like that.”

Only Murders in the Building centers on three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime suddenly find themselves caught up in one.

The series is streaming now on Hulu.
