Harry Styles' Grammys 2023 Performance was Almost Derailed by Technical Difficulties

Harry Styles won big at the 2023 Grammys. However, the Album of the Year-winner’s performance of “As It Was” earlier in the night did not go off without a hitch.

The 29-year-old took the stage to perform on a rotating platform with a crew of dancers during the Biggest Night in Music.

His performance was met with mixed reviews, with some referring to it as “lethargic.” One of his dancers took to social media to reveal that there was a very good reason the number was a little stilted.

Dexter Da Rocha, who performed onstage with Harry during the awards show, hopped on TikTok to explain that the musician and his dancers were thrown off by a technical difficulty: The turntable that they were dancing on was going in the wrong direction.

“12 of us were on the turntable, and we rehearsed for 10 days getting down these beautiful formations and sliding off the turntable,” they said, describing the intended routine as “incredible.”

They continued, noting that “Harry did such a good job integrating into it and had a beautiful duet.”

After a “spotless and beautiful” dress rehearsal, things went awry the second the stage started rotating clockwise instead of counterclockwise. Despite an attempt to alert the person operating the set piece, no one was aware of the change except the dancers and Harry.

Everyone did what they could, but they faced challenges.

“To switch all of those patterns around on the spot having not even walked in that direction … Since it’s circular it pulls you in different directions, and it’s such a special type of balance. So we got accustomed to one way, and it was the opposite way so luckily we worked together and did our best and got to one cool formation for the overhead shot,” Dexter shared.

“Harry did his best to be able to walk and reverse everything while he was singing and reverse his entire duet, which is incredible,” they added.
