Jessica Lange Closes Out Broadway Season with 'Mother Play,' Gets Glowing Reviews for Latest Stage Role

Mother Play is the final show of the 2023-2024 Broadway season and its officially open!

The new play, starring Jessica Lange, celebrated its opening night performance on Thursday (April 25) at the Hayes Theater in New York City.

The legendary actress was joined on the red carpet by co-stars Jim Parsons and Celia Keenan-Bolger.

Mother Play opened right before the close of the Tony Awards eligibility period and it seems like Jessica is a lock for a nomination based on the reviews.

Keenan-Bolger and Parsons are very good indeed in Mother Play, but there’s no question to whom it belongs. Lange is magnificent, especially in this production’s most moving scene,” Time Out New York wrote.

Mother Play, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, is billed as “a bitingly funny and unflinchingly honest new play about the hold our family has over us and the surprises we find when we unpack the past.”

The play is running on Broadway through June 16. Get tickets now!

Jessica Lange & Co-Stars Jim Parsons & Celia Keenan-Bolger Promote Their New Broadway Show 'Mother Play'

Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons, and Celia Keenan-Bolger are stepping out to promote their new Broadway show!

The co-stars posed for photos at the press event for their new show Mother Play on Tuesday (March 19) held at Gibney Dance Studios in New York City.

Here’s the synopsis for Mother Play: “It’s 1962, just outside of D.C., and matriarch Phyllis is supervising her teenage children, Carl and Martha, as they move into a new apartment. Phyllis has strong ideas about what her children need to do and be to succeed, and woe be the child who finds their own path. Bolstered by gin and cigarettes, the family endures — or survives — the changing world around them. Blending flares of imaginative theatricality, surreal farce, and deep tenderness, this beautiful rollercoaster ride reveals timeless truths of love, family, and forgiveness,” according to Playbill.

'Mamma Mia!' Casting Directors Reveal 17 Actresses Who Auditioned for Amanda Seyfried's Role of Sophie, Including Three Stars Who Turned It Down

It has been 15 years since the movie musical Mamma Mia! hit theaters and the film’s casting directors are opening up about the actresses that auditioned for the lead role of Sophie.

Amanda Seyfried ultimately landed the role as she “could not only sing but also looked so much like Meryl [Streep].”

Casting directors Priscilla John and Ellen Lewis chatted with Vogue for an oral history of the movie. They revealed 17 women who auditioned for Sophie and didn’t get the role, including three women who actually passed on the job offer.

Musical director Martin Lowe said, “Hollywood is not my world. Thankfully, I didn’t really know anything about those A-list girls at the time. I’ve subsequently looked back at my lists of people we saw and been shocked to discover some of the people that I apparently met.”

Jesse Williams & Jesse Tyler Ferguson Celebrate Their Second Opening Night of 'Take Me Out' Amid Return to Broadway!

Take Me Out is back on Broadway with stars Jesse Williams and Jesse Tyler Ferguson reprising their roles!

The Tony-winning play returned with an opening night performance on Thursday (October 27) at the Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City.

Take Me Out won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play and Best Featured Actor in a Play for Ferguson. The production is now back on Broadway for a 14-week return engagement. All actors other than Patrick J. Adams returned with the production and he was replaced by Bill Heck.

Celebs like Sara Bareilles, Camryn Manheim, Jessica Hecht and Tony winners Nathan Lane, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Danny Burstein, and Katie Finneran were in the audience for the performance.

Sara previously worked with producers Barry and Fran Weissler on her musical Waitress, so she was clearly there to support them!

In Take Me Out, playwright Richard Greenberg celebrates the personal and professional intricacies of America’s favorite pastime. When Darren Lemming (Williams), the star center fielder for the Empires, comes out of the closet, the reception off the field reveals a barrage of long-held unspoken prejudices dealing with sexuality and masculinity, money and power, and race and class. Facing some hostile teammates and fraught friendships, Darren is forced to contend with the challenges of being a gay person of color within the confines of a classic American institution. As the Empires struggle to rally toward a championship season, the players and their fans begin to question tradition, their loyalties, and the price of victory.

Jesse recently opened up about the show’s famous shower scene and joked about water temperature problems.
