Oscar Isaac Almost Didn't Have A Beard in 'Dune'

Oscar Isaac‘s look in Dune was almost totally different.

In a new interview with GQ, the film’s makeup and hair department head Donald Mowat, opened up about how Oscar was almost beardless in his role as Duke Leto Atreides, the father to Paul, played by Timothee Chalamet.

“It’s an imposing beard” Donald shared. “It’s an important beard, if you will.”

Donald says that Oscar‘s look was inspired by the looks of Greco-Roman and Imperial Russian nobles, and they turned to images of Prince Michael of Kent and Czar Nicholas II of Russia as the main influences.

“We kept [Paul’s] hair very wavy, a lion-like mane. He’s like the young lion to the old—this mane of hair blown in the sand and the dust and the spice—but he is Lady Jessica’s son. He’s pale, he’s statuesque, he’s beautiful, but he’s got his father’s hair.”

Oscar‘s look was enhanced with gray color and fake crow’s feet to help accentuate the age gap between him and Timothee, which also supported their father-son relationship.

Donald added that Oscar‘s beard took an estimated 14 weeks to grow. It received devoted maintenance involving shampooing and conditioning, brushing, beard oil, and regular trimming.

Oscar was seen at the Dune premiere in Venice last month…beardless.
