The show, which revolves around an overweight teenager (Ryan) who seeks revenge on those that tormented her after she loses the weight, was highly criticized. Debby and the film’s cast and crew responded to the backlash.

“We’re not in the business of fat shaming. We’re out to turn a sharp eye on broken, harmful systems that equate thinness with worth,” Debby said.

Alyssa Milano Responds to 'Insatiable' Backlash: 'Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover'

Alyssa Milano is responding to the backlash over her new Netflix show Insatiable, which many believe has a premise of fat-shaming.

“The more I think about it, the trailer was feeding into exactly the thematic issue of the show, which is, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover,’” Alyssa told People about the show, hitting Netflix tomorrow. “People are judging 12 hours of TV from a minute and 28-second trailer.”

“At the end of the day, the show is a satire about how looks can be deceiving and deals with thematic issues like body image and what it means to win, validation, and filling a void,” Alyssa continued.

“I felt so empowered by doing a show that touched on all of these issues. So empowered, in fact, that I felt that I could have the freedom to write that #MeToo tweet, because that happened in the middle of production. I felt so empowered that I wrote my op-ed for TIME magazine about having my anxiety disorder. So, for me, the backlash was personally hurtful, because as we were filming the show, it was so empowering to find myself through the work that everyone was doing,” Alyssa added.

Debby Ryan, another star on the show, also recently responded to the backlash.

Debby Ryan to Star in New 'Coming of Rage' Series 'Insatiable' for Netflix

A new series is heading to Netflix this summer and it is being billed as Heathers meets Mean Girls meets Scream Queens!

Debby Ryan will be starring in the original series Insatiable, a “coming of rage” story that satirizes serious topics with dark humor.

The series is centered on Patty (Ryan), who has been bullied, ignored, and underestimated by those around her because of her weight.

But now that she finds herself suddenly thin, Patty is out for payback against anyone who has ever made her feel bad about herself.

Bob Armstrong (Dallas Roberts), a disgraced attorney whose true passion is coaching beauty pageant contestant, is the only one who sees Patty’s potential, and takes her under his wing — first as a legal client, and then as a pageant contestant whom he coaches toward becoming the top pageant queen in the country.

But Bob and his wife Coralee (Alyssa Milano) have no idea how deep Patty’s rage goes, or how far she will go to exact revenge on anyone who has ever wronged her. Bullies beware: payback’s a bitch, revenge is sweet, and if you cross Patty, you’ll be her next treat.

Watch the date announcement video below and check out the series on Netflix on August 10!
