Shailene Woodley Slams 'Twilight' to 'Teen Vogue': It's About An Unhealthy, Toxic Relationship

Shailene Woodley is ready for her close up on the cover of Teen Vogue magazine’s April 2014 issue.

Here’s what the 22-year-old Divergent actress had to share with the mag:

On the Twilight series: “Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”

On hooking up with co-stars: “I haven’t had time to think about a relationship! I literally have not had a boyfriend in almost five years. I’ve never even hooked up with anybody I’ve worked on a movie with…[After filming ends,] well, that might have happened on something.”

On not changing herself: “I was once told by a studio that I needed to make my look more cosmopolitan, that I needed to create a persona. I looked at them and said, ‘You just told me I wasn’t good enough to be myself. And that is not OK.”

    Lauren Says:

Why do people attack Twilight? This comment from Shailene was unnecessary.
I’ve never seen Twilight actors badmouthing other films and actors.

    Who says … unfortunate

  2. 2
    Domino Says:

Hahaha, I’ve only heard of her recently but I already like her.

    Mary Says:

If I’m ever parent to a girl, I hope she grows up like the king of girl Shailene is. She’s so grounded and well spoken and smart about bullshit, you need not to worry about her.

  4. 4
    Lara Says:

@Lauren: That would be because Twilight is a piece of sh*t, hun.

    Kat Says:

I know people give her a hard time, but I really like her. She speaks her mind, is honest, and has a healthy attitude about who she is and what she does. I wish more young women were like this.

    Oli Says:

She was probably asked about it. You know, the way interviews usually go…
And her answer was smart, she didn’t slam it just for the sake of it but she also gave a reason for opinion. That’s the way intelligente people speak !

    Kat Says:

@Lauren: That’s because they’re too busy badmouthing their OWN film. Go watch any of Rob’s interviews. Entertaining as hell.

Twilight is fiction and I get that fiction isn’t always going to be a good “to do” list of how to live life, but seriously… it is trash that really GLORIFIES Bella’s behaviour. It’s one thing to discuss destructive behaviour like that, but it’s really making it seem romantic and sweet instead of what it really is: destructive and creepy.

    Olivia Says:

I love Shailene and I love that she keeps it real. She should have gotten that Oscar nomination for the Descendants. She out shined George Clooney.

  9. 9
    Shannon Says:

Rob Pattinson himself hates Twilight. No one would do it if it were not for the paycheck. You go Shailene. Speak the truth for all the sensible people in the world.

    DRACULA Says:

The most toxic thing about today’s pop culture relationships is that they are mostly based upon the false non Biblical doctrines of monogamy. Like at the end of that iconic 1980s relationship movie entitled, About Last Night. Wherein Demi Moore asks herself, ‘Why are we doing this?’.

    sabrina Says:

@Lauren: She didn’t bad mouth the film or the actors. She badmouthed the type of relationship it was presenting. I read the first book and saw the first two movies. Bella whines through the movies and her life is over if Edwin doesn’t love her yada yada yada. GET REAL. this isn’t real or true love.

    leah Says:

I don’t really know her … i love the divergent saga , but I don’t know there is something about her that I don’t like – I guess I’ll have to wait for the movie to come out . Plus she is not the kinda of actress I would have imagined to play tris :/ …

  13. 13
    Cara Says:

    LEARN THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. 14
    Caprice Says:

Nobody hates Twilight as much as Robert Pattinson. He pretty much admitted he just did it for the money and fame.

  15. 15
    Alexandra Says:

    Shailene completely agree with you.

  16. 16
    Sayer Says:

She’s becoming as annoying as Anne Hathaway. She needs to stop talking. Divergent won’t be nearly as big as Twilight.

  17. 17
    Nate Says:

Her comment about Twilight same you can say about Romeo and Juliet but both this stories not do any harm to anyone but this action movies where teenagers kill each other yes this is unhealthy

  18. 18
    Cindy Says:

they kill because the adults and the government make them do it. the teenagers didn’t choose it to be that way. Same with the hunger games.

do not compare that twilight **** to a masterpiece like romeo and juliet.

  19. 19
    sweetpea Says:

I’ve read the saga multiple times and I know Bella was NOT trying to kill herself after Edward left.
Geez – maybe she should read those books or watch the (awful) movies BEFORE stating the opinion?

  20. 20
    Nate Says:

@Cindy: Lol it doesn’t matter why they kill each other in fact this movies has violence and kids killings and Twilight is about forbidden love like Romeo and Juliet

  21. 21
    Jenna Says:

I agree with her 150%. Not to mention that it was about a relationship where the guy stalked her half of the time. I love that girls like her and Lena Dunham are coming to the forefront!

  22. 22
    Ha Says:

What she said about Twilight is THE TRUTH, people. Get over it!

  23. 23
    Lala Says:

Already like her! She’s smart and have a great personality.

  24. 24
    Jane Says:

Just when I thought I couldn’t love this girl more she just keeps impressing me. Agree with her 10000%

  25. 25
    Isabel Says:

She’s a smart girl who’s comfortable in her own skin. Good for her.
