Lady Gaga Explains Why She Was Too 'Ashamed' to Start a Friendship with Ariana Grande

Lady Gaga has teamed up with Ariana Grande for the song “Rain On Me,” but it took a while for their friendship to happen.

The 34-year-old Chromatica singer has explained that Ariana, 26, put a lot of effort into forming a friendship, but Gaga kept pushing her away.

“She was so persistent. She would try over and over again to be friends with me,” Gaga said in an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Beats 1. “And I was too ashamed to hang out with her, because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful.”

Gaga explained how Ariana had gone through “really hard life testing stuff,” likely referring to the Manchester Arena bombing and the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.

“Eventually she called me on my s–t. She was, ‘You’re hiding.’ And I was like, ‘I am hiding. I’m totally hiding.’ And then this friendship blossomed,” Gaga said.
