Nancy Pelosi Announces Plans to Step Down From Leadership Role In House of Representatives

Nancy Pelosi will no longer lead the Democratic party in the House of Representatives.

The 82-year-old representative from California has served as the Speaker of the House since 2019. She previously held the title between 2007 and 2011. The title will go back to Republicans after they reclaimed a slim majority in the House following the 2022 midterm elections.

However, Nancy confirmed that she would not put herself up for the title of House Minority Leader, which she previously held between 2011 and 2019 and for four years between 2003 and 2007.

She confirmed her decision on Thursday (November 17).

“With great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress,” Nancy announced while speaking on the House floor, according to Deadline. “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect.”

She will retain her seat in the House, which she was reelected to during the recent election.

The decision comes after her husband Paul Pelosi was attacked in their San Francisco home in late October.
