While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast almost exactly a year ago, Jamie Campbell Bower reflected on auditioning for both major roles.

“Yes,” Jamie said when asked if he had auditioned to play Edward. “That is a true story, and I have an email from, I think it’s from Wyck Godfrey [Twilight producer] at Summit. I think I looked at this a year ago or two years ago because I remember Catherine [Hardwicke, director] had a house down in Santa Monica. I remember, I thought I was driving across the house. I was like, ‘Holy s-it. I remember all of this going on now.’”

He continued, saying, “They were really interested in me reading for Edward, and they were like, ‘The sort of dedication that Jamie brings to his roles, you know, we’re really interested in seeing him.”

What happened? Jamie was in the midst of the release for his movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. “I think life was so crazy and hectic, it was just one of those things that just never came to fruition,” he explained.

Instead of bringing Edward to life, Jamie was brought on for the sequel New Moon, where he played Volturi vampire leader Caius.

Jamie recollected that he never got so far into the process that he did a screentest with Kristen. He even laughingly remembered that he messed up lines while doing a reading and apologized mid-audition.

“I was still so young,” he said. “I was like 19.”

The actor was even younger when he was considered to play Harry Potter…
