Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is not performing like most of the entries into the Harry Potter cinematic universe.
The third film in the spinoff series opened to $43 million in its domestic box office debut, via Variety.
While the number is solid for the pandemic era, putting it at No. 1 at the box office and among the biggest North American openings of 2022, it’s also the worst start for a Harry Potter movie.
2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opened to $74 million in North America, while the 2018 follow-up The Crimes of Grindelwald opened at $62 million.
The movie cost $200 million to produce. The first two Fantastic Beasts movies brought in $814 million globally and $650 million globally, and made 75% of revenues from foreign box offices. The movie has grossed $193 million globally to date.
