Adam Lambert Speaks His Mind on Cultural Appropriation Debate

Adam Lambert rocks a leopard print tee while doing some shopping at Light Bulbs Unlimited on Friday (August 8) in West Hollywood, Calif.

“This whole cultural appropriation debate is so 20 years ago. Our cultures r BLENDING. A new, open minded/hearted generation is on the rise,” the 32-year-old entertainer tweeted earlier in the week.

He added, “I am so lucky to be part of a circle of fellow artists who are so open and full of love for our respective backgrounds and cultures. There are times I forget (or want to) that there r others that aren’t as integrated or progressive. Our experience isn’t everyone else’s.”

FYI: Cultural appropriation is “the adoption of some specific elements of one culture by a different cultural group.”

How comes no white people or any other group of people never want to imitate Puerto Rican culture? I find that strange and insulting to Puerto Ricans.

  • aaaaaaaaannnnnnnaaaaaaa

    gay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ben

@Ascuncion: That’s because PuertoRicans have no culture they steal from everybody who does. Imitation Is The Highest Form of Flattery that’s why no one imitates you.

  • ?

Lol is open minded but states he wants to forget there are others out there not like him.

  • Jen

aww he loves that lightbulb lol he should go back and buy it

  • Jack

It’s easy for someone who is a caucasian popstar to say it’s about embracing other cultures, not using them for spectacle. What else is he going to say? “What I’m doing is offensive to the people who the culture belongs to?” No, because then he would lose respect (not that he has any legitimately) and, most importantly, he’d lose $$$$$$.

  • Leigh

Dear Jack – you simply don’t know the man and his kindness and generosity – would appreciate your checking his Wiki to understand why he is so widely respected by people who actually know him. Thanks.

  • Rachel

She forgot to put her wig on, looks like a NJ housewife from the forehead down….

  • Tanner

@Ascuncion: LOL – are you serious?

    go, Adam!

  • tick

He should’ve just stayed in the closet. Ditto for Neil Patrick Harris.
They are both so arrogant & annoying ever since they came out.
Lambert ruined Queen. NPH ruined A Million Ways to Die in the West.

  • tick

NPH also ruined How I Met Your Mother.
He is terrible at playing straight men.
    I guess that’s why it’s called ACTING.

  • GGK

Adam Lambert is awesome. It’s been more than 5 years now that I have been completely fascinated with him and I don’t even want to explain or rationalize it anymore. He even makes shopping for light bulbs exciting! I saw him fronting Queen this past summer and I was amazed how superbly he pulled it off. It was one epic experience!!!

  • milo

Lol at the moronic comments by Rachel, Jack and tick.

Re cultural approriation, I mostly agree with Adam. I mean if all of it was wrong we wouldn’t be able enjoy the cuisines of other cultures, for example (I love Mexican, Greek, sushi etc., not giving up those!)

Anyway, Adam’s looking hot, even when shopping for lightbulbs.

  • girlbye

There’s enjoying other people’s culture and then there’s stealing it and passing it off as your own. appropriation is the latter. adam, stick to your………whatever it is that you do

  • nocando

I believe Adam’s intent is good albeit a tad na├»ve. It’s one thing to enjoy and appreciate elements of cultures other than our own respectfully. To frivolously use something that represents something sacred to a culture or to perpetuate a negative stereotype is a whole different thing. Cultural appropriation is a touchy subject in the PC world we live.

he’s gay…so what! the man is a brilliant singer and entertainer, and if you haven’t seen him belt it out with queen then you’re missing the best show of the year!! love this guy!!

  • JLM

Every single person who works with Adam Lambert talks about how down to earth, kind, and super a guy he really is. So all you who just want to distort and criticize, just know that you are talking out your ….. probably more about yourself than Adam Lambert.
