'The Hobbit' Beats Out 'Unbroken' & 'Into the Woods' to Win Christmas Weekend Box Office

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies held strong at No. 1 for the second week in a row, earning $54.5 million for the four-day weekend!

According to THR, the flick, starring Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, and more, has taken in nearly $170 million domestically.

Coming in at No. 2 was the Angelina Jolie-directed war film Unbroken, which surpassed expectations with a whopping $47.3 million gross.

Disney’s film adaptation of the musical Into the Woods, starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, and more, was not far behind with $46.1 million, earning the third spot.

Rounding out the top five were Ben Stiller‘s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb sequel and the Annie remake, starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz, which brought in $27.9 million and $21.2 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, the highly-controversial Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy The Interview placed No. 16, opening to an estimated $2.8 million from 331 theaters for the four-day weekend.

The Gambler, starring Mark Wahlberg, impressed with an estimated $14 million-plus opening, while Tim Burton‘s Big Eyes faltered with a $4.4 million gross.

Finally, Bradley Cooper‘s American Sniper grossed a whopping $850,000 from four theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas for an awesome screen average of $212,500.
