Zaevion Dobson's Family Gives Emotional Speech on Gun Violence at ESPYs 2016 (Video)

The family of Zaevion Dobson takes to the stage to accept the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on his behalf at the 2016 ESPY Awards on Wednesday (July 13) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The 15-year-old football player was shot and killed in December 2015 while shielding three girls from gun fire in Knoxville, Tennessee. His family gave an emotional speech urging people to take action against gun violence.

Stephen Curry presented the award and Michael B. Jordan narrated a video segment telling the life story of Zaevion.

“The family of Zaevion William Dobson accepts with great appreciation the honorable Arthur Ashe Award on behalf of our beloved young man of valor, who sacrificed himself to save others,” his mom Zenobia Dobson said in a statement before the show.

“Arthur Ashe was a leading example of strength and courage for us as a family, and we feel truly blessed and honored that our Zaevion joins the ranks of honorees,” the statement continued. “Like Arthur Ashe, Zaevion faced obstacles, but he overcame them. With this award, we know that Zaevion‘s name and example will never be forgotten.”
