Matt Smith steps out in character on the set of his upcoming movie Mapplethorpe on Thursday (July 27) in New York City.

The 34-year-old actor, best known for his roles on Doctor Who and The Crown, will be playing photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. He was seen wearing a curly wig!

The movie follows Mapplethorpe‘s rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989.

Matt and his longtime girlfriend Lily James were spotted hanging out together this past weekend during a break from filming.
