The original Broadway production of Hamilton was filmed back in June 2016 and now the movie is finally being released on Disney+ this weekend.

The release of the movie, and the way it is being released, marks a monumental moment in Broadway history and we’re so excited for fans to watch this incredible film!

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote and starred in the show, which is already one of the most successful Broadway shows of all time after just five years. The original cast of the show has also gained stardom thanks to their roles in the musical. Now, those who didn’t get a chance to witness their performances live on stage will finally get the chance to see them.

1. The leads from the Original Broadway Cast are all in the movie!

You will get to watch nearly the entire original Broadway cast, including ALL of the lead actors, perform in the show. The original stars began leaving in 2016 and you’ll likely never get the chance to see them perform the show live on stage ever again.

2. The show is still a sell-out hit on Broadway!

Ever since debuting on Broadway in 2015, Hamilton has sold every single seat in the house for every single performance. The show has been sold out for five years and will likely remain that way in the future. With ticket demand so large for this show, it’s surprising that a filmed version of the show would be released so soon into its run, but now fans all around the world will get to experience the musical!

3. The movie was sold for $75 million to Disney!

The producers of Hamilton financed the entire film themselves and did not seek financial assistance from a studio. That means they owned the rights to the film and then they shopped it to all of the studios in Hollywood. Disney won the bidding war and purchased the completed film for $75 million.

4. The movie wasn’t even supposed to be released until October 2021!

When Disney purchased the movie, the studio intended to give the film a theatrical release in October 2021. The movie likely would have been a big hit for the studio, but Disney decided to make it a marquee event for the streaming service Disney+ amid the pandemic. The film is now being released on the streaming service on July 3, 2020, over a year ahead of the planned release date.

5. You can watch the full show from the comfort of your own home!

How many times can you say you’ve watched one of Broadway’s biggest hit musicals from the comfort of your own home?! Now that Hamilton will be streaming on Disney+, you can watch the show from your couch as often as you’d like!

6. Broadway won’t even be open again until 2021!

Because of the pandemic, every production of Hamilton around the globe has been shut down and it’s likely that none of them will reopen until 2021. Broadway officially is closed for the rest of the year and a reopening plan is still not set in place.
