Scarlett Johansson Is Suing Disney - Find Out Why

Scarlett Johansson has worked with Disney for years in the Marvel films as she portrayed the fan favorite character Black Widow. In a shocking move, Scarlett is now suing Disney.

The 36-year-old actress is alleging that her contract was breached when Disney released Black Widow in theaters and on the Disney+ streaming service.

In Scarlett’s lawsuit, filed Thursday (July 29), she maintains that her contract stated she was entitled to the film being released in theaters only, with her salary being based in large part on how well the film performed at the box office.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the suit said.

“This will surely not be the last case where Hollywood talent stands up to Disney and makes it clear that, whatever the company may pretend, it has a legal obligation to honor its contracts,” John Berlinski, an attorney at Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP who represents Ms. Johansson, said in a statement as well.

If you’re wondering, Scarlett allegedly tried to bring up this issue with Disney and Marvel prior to the suit.

WSJ. reports that “Ms. Johansson’s representatives sought to renegotiate her contract after learning of the dual-release strategy for ‘Black Widow,’ which she has said is her ninth and last Marvel movie. Disney and Marvel were unresponsive.”

Reports indicate Scarlett may miss $50 million due to the Disney+ release.

Black Widow grossed $80 million at the domestic box office, $78 million overseas, and $60 million on Disney+.
