Tom Bergeron Explains His 'DWTS' Exit: 'The Show That I Left Was Not the Show That I Loved'

Tom Bergeron is revealing the reason reason behind his Dancing with the Stars exit.

The 65-year-old hosted the reality dance competition show for over ten years, before it was announced in 2020 that Tyra Banks would be taking over for it’s 29th season.

On an episode of the Bob Saget’s Here for You podcast, Tom shared that he felt his time on DWTS was coming to an end leading up to his firing.

“In all candor, the show that I left was not the show that I loved,” he told Bob. “So, the end of the season that turned out to be my last season [in 2019], I kind of knew.

Tom continued, “So I took everything out of my dressing room that I really wanted… It was kind of obvious that we were kind of butting heads.”

“I wasn’t surprised that, that was my last season,” he added. “So there was no blue period. Actually, I think Erin and I had more fun getting fired than anyone.”

While Tom didn’t specify what he and the producers clashed about, it’s possible he was referring to ABC’s decision to book former President Trump‘s White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on the show. The host took to social media after the cast was announced to react to the network’s decision.

Tom noted at the end of the podcast, “You know what nobody needs to hear? A whiny millionaire … It’s so self-absorbed. I mean, look. I had great fortune. I mean, I had two network shows running simultaneously for the better part of a decade and a half.”
