Kumail Nanjiani Reveals Why He Was Upset with Wife Emily V. Gordon on Their 15th Wedding Anniversary

Kumail Nanjiani really fumbled his most recent wedding anniversary!

On Monday night (August 8), the 44-year-old Eternals actor stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! for an interview with guest host Rob McElhenney.

During the interview, Kumail revealed that he failed to get his wife Emily V. Gordon a gift for their 15th wedding anniversary.

We just had our 15th wedding anniversary,” Kumail shared. “Did we do anything special? So, we were working, you know. I was shooting the Chippendales show and she produces it, I’m in it. And so, she was like — weeks before — she was like, ‘Let’s not get each other anything.’”

Kumail went on say that he confirmed the no-gift pact with Emily, 43, several times in the weeks leading up to their anniversary.

However, at the last minute he found out that Emily in fact did get him a gift.

“I’m in bed the night before our wedding anniversary, I have to be at work at 5 a.m. the next day,” Kumail recalled. “As I’m falling asleep I get a text from a friend of mine. He’s like, ‘Hey, big secret, I have two pieces of bad news for you: One, she got you something, and two, it’s really great.’”

“So I start spiraling, you know because I haven’t bought a gift and I’m a man of my word,” Kumail continued. “But I wake up the next morning and I’m freaking out. I get to work and I’m like, ‘What am I gonna get her, what am I gonna get her?’”

Eventually, Kumail took a break from freaking out to play his favorite game “Framed,” which is a mobile game where players are given a still image from a movie and they have to guess which movie it’s from.

While playing the game on his anniversary, he was shocked to learn that a image from his movie The Big Sick – which he co-wrote with Emily – was in the game.

“I said, ‘Emily, you should play ‘Framed’ today,’” Kumail added. “And she says, ‘I know, happy anniversary.’”

Kumail said he was initially so excited that their movie was part of the game, before admitting that he was very upset that Emily didn’t stick to the no-gift pact that they had previously agreed on.

“She’s ruined my day three different ways now,” Kumail explained. “[One], my movie’s not big enough to be with those movies. Two, I thought the universe was telling me I was going to have a great day. Turns out the universe is just telling me that my wife is a liar. And three, now I gotta get her anniversary present.”

As for what he ended up getting Emily for their anniversary, Kumail revealed he “got her a book about birds.”
