'Twisters,' Sequel to 1996 Classic 'Twister,' Is in the Works

Twisters is coming!

The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster film Twister is officially in the works, with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment meeting with directors for a planned Spring 2023 start, via Deadline.

Universal and Warner Bros are co-financing the project according to the report, with Universal taking the creative lead on the Frank Marshall-produced film.

Steven Spielberg apparently “flipped” for the script written by The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith, and his enthusiasm fast-tracked the movie.

Joseph Kosinski was going to direct, but he committed to the Formula One racing movie for Brad Pitt that Apple acquired last June instead.

Contenders to direct include the Free Solo team of Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi, Dan Trachtenberg and Travis Knight.

Jan De Bont directed the original.

As for the plot: according to sources, “the hope is to bring Helen Hunt back,” with the film focusing on the daughter she had with the character played by the late Bill Paxton. The daughter has “caught the storm-chasing bug her parents had.”

The original film grossed more than $494 million worldwide.
