'Avatar 2' Director James Cameron Reveals Insight Into the Movie's Budget & How Much Money It Needs to Make to Break Even

The highly anticipated movie Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in theaters in less than a month and it’s expected to be a huge hit.

The first Avatar movie is still the highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.9 billion worldwide, so it’s safe to assume that the second movie will also be a success.

In a new interview, director James Cameron opened up about the film’s massive budget and how much the movie will need to gross at the box office to break even for Disney.

James told GQ that the movie was “very f–king [expensive]” to make, though he didn’t confirm an actual amount. It’s rumored that it cost $250 million to make.

The director estimated that to break even on Avatar 2, “you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

The highest-grossing movie is Avatar with $2.9 billion, followed by Avengers: Endgame in second with $2.7 billion, Titanic in third with $2.1 billion, Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $2.07 billion, and Avengers: Infinity War with $2.05 billion.

Basically, Avatar: The Way of Water needs to gross more than $2 billion at the global box office or it might be a flop for Disney.

Watch the final trailer for the movie and find out how much money the movie is projected to make on opening weekend.
