Irene Cara, 'Fame' & 'Flashdance... What a Feeling' Singer, Passes Away at Age 63

Irene Cara, the singer best known for her songs “Fame” and “Flashdance… What a Feeling” has sadly died. She was 63-years-old.

The Oscar- and Grammy-winning singer, actress, and producer’s publicist confirmed the news of her death in a statement shared on social media on Saturday morning (November 26).

“It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” Judith A. Moore wrote on Irene‘s Twitter. “The Academy Award winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer passed away in her Florida home. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available.”

The statement continued, “Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date.”

Irene first rose to fame when she was cast in the 1980 musical Fame, in which she starred as Coco Hernandez and sang the title track.

She later sang and co-wrote “Flashdance… What A Feeling” for the soundtrack of the 1983 movie Flashdance, with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey.

The song earned Irene two Grammys – for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or A Television Special – along with the Oscar for Best Original Song.
