Michelle Yeoh is speaking out in response to the controversy surrounding the Best Actress category at the Oscars this year.

The beloved actress received her first-ever Oscar nomination for her work in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. Also nominated in the category are TAR‘s Cate Blanchett, Blonde‘s Ana de Armas, To Leslie‘s Andrea Riseborough, and The FabelmansMichelle Williams.

There was controversy surrounding Andrea‘s nomination because of the last-minute effort by Hollywood elites to get her included in the category. After an investigation, the Academy decided that no changes will be made to the nominations.

Now, Michelle is defending Andrea‘s nomination and reacting to several snubs in the category, including The Woman King‘s Viola Davis and Till‘s Danielle Deadwyler.

“The Academy has always prided itself on having regulations and playing by the rules and if [cheating them] was so easy it would have done before,” Michelle told BBC Radio 4′s Today. “We are always evolving on how to protect our integrity and I have great faith we will continue to do that.”

In response to the snubs, Michelle said, “I love [Viola and Danielle] to the extreme and wish we were all getting Oscars, but it’s tough. It took me 40 years to even get a nomination. Every single actor and actress puts their heart and soul into these movies and you don’t necessarily start thinking you are going to get nominated. The stories we want to tell are more important.”

Danielle just reacted to her snub.
