Emma Thompson Opens Up About the Pressure of Oscar Campaigning

Emma Thompson isn’t just a one-time Oscar winner, but a two-time winner, and in a new interview, recalled just how stressful campaigning for the awards actually are.

The 63-year-old actress and writer spoke to Radio Times about what goes into the Oscar campaigns and admitted she got sick from it all.

Emma, who has been nominated for the golden statuette five times, won two of those – her first for Best Actress in 1993 for Howards End, and again in 1996 for Best Writing for Sense and Sensibility.

“Both times I had to do the Oscars, I got seriously ill,” she told the outlet. “I found the pressure and glare of it too much. It’s astonishing.”

Emma added that when it’s all over, as the nominations come out, “you want to lie down in a dark room. You think, ‘Please don’t ask me any questions or make me talk about myself.’ I quickly developed a sort of allergy to that part of the job.”
