Betsey Johnson Reveals the Shocking Reason Why She Got Married in Her Underwear

Betsey Johnson is looking back at her wedding to now-ex husband John Cale.

The 80-year-old fashion designer married the 81-year-old Velvet Underground co-founder back in 1968 at City Hall.

In a new video shared to TikTok, Betsey revealed that she got married in underwear – and the reason why will shock you!

Betsey recalled that she arrived at City Hall wearing a “beautiful, burgundy, crushed-velvet tunic top” paired with bell bottom pants, but she wasn’t allowed to wear the pants in order to get married.

“We went to City Hall to go get married,” Betsey recalled. “All of a sudden, they’re saying, ‘We can’t marry you in pants.’ Can you believe that?”

“The rule was, you could not do anything in pants,” Betsey continued. “You couldn’t go to a restaurant in pants, uptown. You couldn’t get married in pants.”

So Betsey‘s simple solution to the issue was to just take her pants off and got married in her underwear.

“So, what was really funny, was I was wearing a crotch-length, little tunic top,” Betsey said said. “So, right in front of the judge, I said, ‘I’m not gonna go home to change. I’ll just take my pants off.’ So, I got married in this tiny, tiny, little velvet tunic.”

“The idea that there were rules like that,” Betsey added with a scoff.

Betsey and John were married for three years before divorcing in 1971. She went on to have a relationship with sculptor Clark Murray, whom she shares daughter Lulu, now 48, with.

In 1981, she then married Jeffrey Oliviere, but they two split in 1984. Betsey married TV producer Brian Reynolds in 1997.
