Just Jared: What has been your biggest challenge so far being on the show?
Jamie Lynn Spears: Number one challenge is the mom guilt of being like, ‘I should be doing things with my kids instead of doing anything else in the world, including dancing. And then also it’s just much harder physically and mentally than I ever could have imagined learning these routines and much less performing them on live television.

JJ: What’s something new that you’ve learned about yourself since starting DWTS?
JLS: I have learned that I do really well with motivation that’s not necessarily, like I need to be pushed harder. I don’t need somebody to tell me I’m doing good if I’m not. I kind of, you know, with my children, I always want to be,’You’re doing a great job hunny,’ and like that’s all good and fine and dandy, but I feel like with me, I need to be more strict on myself to really get myself in it, which is, you know, it’s weird to think about it that way. But I do think my motivation is different.

JJ: Has there been something that has really surprised you so far?
JLS
: I think the thing that most surprises me is I’ll shout, I mean, I have so much respect for dancers and every like I’ve I’ve always had respect for dancers, but it’s the process and learning process of how many things are going on in your brain when you’re dancing, even just for one minute. It is so much harder. I know a lot of people say that. But it’s like, imagine running a marathon will also contracting every muscle in your body and also making your brain remember what step is next. It’s a lot going on.

I never thought it would be so challenging. It’s not just physical. It’s also mental. I was like dancers probably can do anything in the world they want to do because the coordination mentally and physically is extraordinary.

JJ: Is there a dance style that you’re looking forward to doing the most?
JLS
: I am nervous about them all. Now that I’ve done the tango, I was like that was really strict and really hard. So I’ve realized, I’ve humbled myself to realize that every single one of them are going to have their challenges.

JJ: Is there a style you’re excited to try?
JLS
: I think that we’re doing the cha cha this week and that’s really fun. So I’m looking forward to that. And then any, I think there’s one where you kind of, it’s not really freestyle, but like kind of telling a story with your dance. I’m looking forward to that. And I think that will be able, and that will allow me to channel a lot of my emotions and my actions go into that.

JJ: The contemporary dance!
JLS
: Yes, not the freestyle. Excuse me, I’m not quite so versed yet as a dancer.

JJ: Now that you have the first week done and out of the way, has that helped you in being more confident moving forward?
JLS
: I definitely think the whole process of the whole production of performing in that kind of element was great to go ahead and get the first one out of the way, because you can’t really put into words what it’s like. And they do give you so many rehearsals that you feel good by the time you get there, but I don’t know that I even can tell you that I feel better or worse because when you’re in the moment, it’s just like everything leaves your body. I don’t know. Is that going to happen again? I have no idea. But that’s definitely what happened the first time.

JJ: What do you hope to improve on for week two?
JLS
: To have fun and show personality and not be so focused on the steps. I want to get the steps right, but I also, I need to perform it and like have fun and do what I know I’m actually good at is, you know, my day job as an actor. So I should bring some of that to the dance floor.

JJ: Speaking of week two, what can you tease about your “Latin Night” cha cha?
JLS
: It’s definitely a lot more fun and a lot more sass. And I think that is something that people were missing from me, but also will be kind of surprised to see. [The sass] is something I’m really counting on.

JJ: Since you are also a singer/songwriter, has that helped you at all with learning steps and music cues?
JLS
: Truly, I felt like, OK, I’m an actress. I’m like, I know how to play fair. I can turn all of these into a role and make it fun. But I did not realize how caught up I was going to get in the technique. And learning the technique is, like I obsess about doing it perfect, that I forget about having fun and making a character, which has been, was my biggest issue the first week. [I] was like, I didn’t just enjoy the whole process, and I just kind of focused on the technique. That was something that I need to lean more into, is like having fun and enjoying what I’m doing.

JJ: Speaking of, would you ever dance to one of your own songs, like Jason Mraz and Barry Williams did week one?
JLS
: Yeah, there’s been some talks about that. We of course want to make sure we’re following the guidelines as far as, you know, SAG and everything goes. My whole reason for doing this show is to donate to a community that has been a part of my life, and for my young girls. And to give back to them during the time when they can’t work. So I want to make sure that I’m respecting that in all areas. There’s definitely one song in particular that we want to do.

JJ: How has it been working with Alan as your partner?
JLS
: It’s been wonderful. I mean, he’s been tough on me, which is good, but he’s a wonderful teacher. He’s patient, he pushes me, and he doesn’t let me… He doesn’t let me get complacent. He wants me to go further and push harder because he wants me to do good. And I think that’s been a really wonderful thing to have somebody that believes in you and pushes you to be your best potential.

JJ: Do you have anything you want to say to those who are cheering you on?
JLS
: I just want to thank everybody for voting and also just continue to vote and hopefully make them proud and put on a good show for them and be able to donate back to my community at the same time.
