Robert Downey Jr.: 'I Am Not A Method Actor'

Robert Downey Jr. goofs around while making an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday (December 15) in Hollywood.

The 46-year-old actor promoted his latest flick, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and also chatted about uncomfortable holiday office parties, going to Sting‘s 60th birthday party, and perfecting a British accent for the action film.

Asked by Jimmy if he spoke with the accent even when they weren’t filming, Robert joked, ‘No, I am not a method actor. I am a lazy person.”

“The accent thing, I have a really great dialect coach … who just drills it into me. He speaks perfectly so when he hears me not in accent he finds it amusing but also repelling,” he added

most actors of this era aren’t method actors and couldn’t get into the actors studio if they had to to save their careers. love me some Robert Downey Jr but he doesn’t know if he’s a method actor until he tries it

whatev, he is a true “artist” no matter how he does it, just naturally gifted

He has always been the best actor ever since when he first started in acting. I love all his movies and RDJ can play any characters. He makes all his movie believable.

method acting is not real acting…

@ha ha:

I agree. I don’t understand why some people are so obsessed with method acting and think that method actors are always better. Laurence Olivier, one of the best actors in history, wasn’t method and it didn’t make him any less of an artist. He once said that every actor has his own method and for him that is the real meaning of method acting. He hated the whole idea of living the character’s life instead of just playing the character because actor should have the natural ability to play his part when it’s needed without becoming the character in real life.

RDJ is a great actor proving method acting by no means works for everyone…obviously D Day Lewis is a fantastic method actor, but everyone is different..I hate when actors and acting teachers think Stanislavski is the end all be all answer to great acting. That’s why there’s so many different methods out there, each have valid points, but it’s most definitely NOT universal. I’m with RDJ…follow your own instincts

@Josie: Olivier was a classic actor, trained in shaksperean theatre just like most of the british actors, that’s why brithish do all these periods movies because they were trained for it. Method acting is great because talent is not requiered but I do agree that an actor has to be trained in as many techniues as possible because each one adds a different side of reality to their performances and so, an actor has more tools to add to his performance.

Wow- he looks really happy! I think sobriety and love agree with him! I wonder if staying sober is hard for him- he looks really good!
