Sonia Manzano, aka Maria From 'Sesame Street,' Retiring After 44 Years On the Air
Sonia Manzano, known for her work as Maria on the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, will be retiring from the program, she announced at the American Library Association’s annual conference on Monday (June 29).
The 65-year-old actress appeared on the show from 1971 to the present.
“It was so in-your-face, so compelling,” Sonia said about the role in the past. “At that time, there were no people of color on television and if there were, they certainly weren’t nice little Susan and Gordon [other characters on the show].”
Since the news broke, fans have been sending out tweets showing support and love for Sonia, who played the role of Maria for 44 years!
@SoniaMManzano thank you for being a wonderful part of my childhood.
