'Game of Thrones' Will Officially End After Eight Seasons

HBO has confirmed that Game of Thrones will be ending after eight seasons.

The news was revealed at the network’s panel held during the 2016 Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour on Saturday (July 30).

The first question that HBO programming president Casey Bloys was asked was about the future of the smash hit series.

“Yes, I think [the showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do,” Bloys said (via THR). “If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons but we want to take their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show is.”

Season seven is set to premiere in summer 2017 and it will have seven episodes. The producers of the series have said that it will span 75 episodes in total, so that means season eight will likely have eight episodes.

“We’ve talked about it,” Bloys said about the episode count, which isn’t yet confirmed. “It’s not something I’m opposed to but it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure the guys can wrap their heads around it when they are about to start production. We’re open to it; the guys aren’t opposed to it but there’s no concrete plans right now.”
