Brenda Song Opens Up About New Series 'Pure Genius' Before Tonight's Premiere

Brenda Song has a brand new show called Pure Genius and its’ premiering tonight on CBS.

The 28-year-old actress, who you might recognize from her Disney Channel days, stars as Angie, one of the many tech and medical professionals who help to run Bunker Hill, a state-of-the-art facility which treats rare medical conditions.

JustJared caught up with Brenda ahead of the premiere, where we learned more about the show.

JJ: Tell us about Angie Cheng. What does she bring to the table that the others don’t? What are some personal things that you have brought to the character?

Brenda Song:: Angie is the tech aspect of Bunker Hill. [It's] Her job to find, use or even create new technologies to help the doctors aide in the care of the patients. Angie and James [Bell, played by Augustus Pew] represent the digital age that is upon us (laughs). I think that with every character that you play, you always bring a little of yourself. With Angie I think there’s a bit of Brenda’s dry sarcastic sense of humor for sure.

JJ: You obviously get along insanely well with your cast mates. What’s been some of the best moments so far?
BS
: I love this cast so much!!! I think one of my favorite moments so far is when Dermot and his wife took us out for karaoke. We had soooo much fun! We got to really let loose and be silly. FYI, I’m terrible at karaoke!

JJ: Creator Jason Katims said he was inspired by doctors and physicians who had a passion for medicine for the show. Are there any doctors, or everyday people that you are extremely thankful for?
BS
: My mother is a three-time breast cancer survivor and she still gets her treatments every three weeks. I am so so grateful for her amazing team of doctors and nurses at UCLA. they have been so wonderful throughout this journey. I also have to shout out to Dr. James Watson (one of my mom’s doctors). He is just so passionate, kind and brilliant. Every time my mom and I went to her appointments with him, I came out with a plethora of new knowledge. He is truly so inspiring. I’m so grateful for his dedication and passion.

JJ: Focusing on the medical side of the show – do you ever think medicine and hospitals will be as hi-tech as Bunker Hill is?
BS
: I hope that one day we will be in a place where we’ll be able to utilize all the amazing technologies at our disposal to aid the advancement of healthcare. We’re hoping that Bunker Hill is a peek into the future of what hospitals will be like.

JJ: How much tech is too much tech? Do you ever feel to just leave technology behind, or do you like how it’s shaped the world? What are your thoughts?
BS
: Fortunately and unfortunately, technology isn’t going anywhere. At times, I do think it’s a bit much because everyone is always on their phones (myself included) and you do lose a bit of that human interaction. I’m pretty bad at technology social media and all that, but I am very grateful for the convenience it brings. I also think that because I didn’t grow up with all this crazy tech, it’s not my nature to automatically Snapchat or tweet something. I didn’t have a cell phone until I was 16!

JJ: What piece of technology, that we don’t have right now, do you wish we had in everyday life?
BS
: I wish we had a teleporter!! That’s the LA driver (who is stuck in traffic most of the day) talking.

JJ: Pure Genius is going to be up against Thursday Night Football, and we are hoping it doesn’t get lost in that. What would you say to fans to urge them to watch the show?
BS
: All I can say is that Pure Genius may not have a football, but we do have a great cast of characters who are (hopefully) giving you a glance into the future of medicine. This show is about possibilities and hope. Hopefully (see what I did there) people will enjoy watching it, as much as we enjoy making it.
