Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Pledge to Support Inclusion Riders in Future Deals

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck just announced that their production company Pearl Street will be adopting an inclusion rider agreement in all their future deals.

The company’s Head of Strategic Outreach Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni took to her Twitter to make the announcement during the SXSW Festival.

“On behalf of Pearl Street Films, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Todd, Drew Vinton & I will be adopting the #InclusionRider for all of our projects moving forward,” Fanshen wrote.

An inclusion rider is a contract addendum that requires studios to hire a diverse crew and/or cast for a project, which Frances McDormand brought attention to during the 2018 Oscars ceremony.

Her announcement comes after Michael B. Jordan revealed that he would add the inclusion rider to all projects produced by his company, Outlier Society Productions.

    lol what future deals?
These two dickheads have more box office bombs between them than any other Hwood duo at this point. And they look like shit! How hard to look 10 years younger than your age when you’re a Hwood actor? The dumber one has an embarrassing personal life, botched plastic surgery and a drinking problem.
What dumbass studio will hire these morons? Oh wait… WB. They are the incompetent idiots who will still go for these imbeciles.

It is better than not doing anything, at least they are doing something, unlike other people and their production companies.

People should be hired on merit and merit alone.

  • Curt Noydb

Veiled racism. You are not good enough based on merit but since you are a minority we will hire you. Now sit in the corner and stay out of the way until we need a photo-op

I don’t know what things are like in the industry you work in, but in this one, it’s not a matter of not being “good enough” or lacking the “merits” – there are tons of qualified people to choose from for pretty much every job that comes up… so it’s a matter of choosing the QUALIFIED person of color or woman or LGBT person over the qualified straight white man once in a while because they can offer a diverse perspective… it’s just good business sense. (that said, it’s not something I trust these two morons to do sensitively but at least they’re trying, I guess…)

    Totally agree imnobody!!!
Then we have positive discrimination where businesses have quotas for race & disability profiles. Employers are forced into offering positions to a specific profile over experience and competence. They in turn are not necessarily hiring the best candidate for the job.

  • Sansa Squad

I think the assumption is that everyone who is being considered IS qualified, so it’s really just a matter of choosing candidates who bring a diverse perspectives – which is good business sense. (Studies show that diverse teams produce better results than homogenous ones, so if everyone has the same qualifications, differentiating by background is the logical next step…) The notion of “quotas” is outdated and, for the most part, inaccurate – at least when it comes to most businesses.

I think that could be true for some businesses but I know from hiring blue collar workers, I was overruled on a hiring decision by the president of that corporation because of a quota shortage. He specifically told me that the candidate I had selected was clearly the better candidate but because we “had a quota shortage”, we would be filling that position with that other candidate. I was beyond floored!
I since got out of that company and have my own business!

Interesting (and good for you!)… I only know my own perspective so I can really only speak to the entertainment industry and the different types of businesses that operate within it, but diversity is something that’s encouraged though certainly not enforced by strict quotas (because, to your point, the “quota system” is just bad business and doesn’t accomplish anything – it’s also a really lazy, ineffective way of building more diverse teams). That’s why inclusion riders are important, because they’re specific to our industry – it’s the only real way to hold these companies, and especially unions, accountable to let capable, qualified women and POC in. (We do have a huge workforce though and most people work in jobs they’re overqualified for anyway, so it’s probably a unique circumstance.)
