'Croods 2' Stays on Top at the Box Office in December Amid Pandemic

The Croods: A New Age is continuing to dominate at the box office.

The animated film once again led at the box office over the weekend, pulling in an additional $3 million in its third weekend, bringing in an overall haul of $24.1 million, Variety reported Sunday (December 13).

“Thanks to an unprecedented agreement that allows Universal Pictures to put new releases on demand within weeks of their theatrical premieres, the studio has been more willing than rivals to unveil smaller-scale movies during the pandemic. That’s resulted in Universal and its specialty label Focus Features dominating over U.S. charts. Three of the top five highest-grossing movies this weekend belong to the Comcast-owned studio,” the outlet reported of the studio’s decision to release films amid the pandemic.

Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds all lend their voices to the film. In the movie, the prehistoric family the Croods are challenged by a rival family the Bettermans, who claim to be better and more evolved.

The original Croods movie earned $89 million during its first two weekends in 2013.
