Here's What Whoopi Goldberg Did After Winning Her Oscar in 1990

Whoopi Goldberg is looking back on her Oscar win in 1990.

In her interview with Variety, the 65-year-old actress and comedian opened up about picking up the trophy and then taking her fellow nominees out to dinner afterwards.

Whoopi and her fellow nominees Annette Bening, Lorraine Bracco, Diane Ladd, and Mary McDonnell, all went to dinner after the show to celebrate, and Whoopi even had chocolate Oscar statuettes made that she presented to them.

“We all did really good work,” she recalled. “Any one of us could’ve taken it, and I don’t think anybody would’ve been mad at anybody else. Sometimes you look at actors and you know, ‘Oh, he’s mad,’ but with us, it was just ‘Whoever wins is paying, that’s all I know. Free food.’”

Whoopi, who won for her role as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost, opened up about how the movie is still making an impact.

“We weren’t sure what the hell we were shooting,” she muses. “I don’t think any of us thought it would have this sort of impact, and then the box office numbers started coming in, and everybody was like, ‘Do we have back end on this movie? Because I’d like some.’”

Whoopi added, “Everybody wants to feel like their loved one is there with them, and that the bad guys go to hell and good guys go to heaven, and that love is forever. Everybody wants that kind of magical connection that Demi [Moore] and Patrick [Swayze]’s characters have.”
