'Star Trek Into Darkness' Tops Weekend Box Office

Star Trek Into Darkness has opened to a whopping $84.1 million, topping this weekend’s box office!

According to THR, the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, slid past the 2009 original film’s debut of $79.2 million.

Coming in at number two was Iron Man 3, which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, with an additional $20 million, bringing its total so far to $337.1 million.

The 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s novel “The Great Gatsby” – starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire – claimed the number three spot with $23.4 million earned.

Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s action/comedy film Pain & Gain, and Harrison Ford‘s 42 rounded out the top four and five spots with $3.1 million and $2.7 million earned, respectively.
