Idris Elba on SAG Awards Winners: 'Welcome to Diverse TV'
Idris Elba made a statement about the diverse actors being awarded at the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium on Saturday (January 30) in Los Angeles.
After winning two awards himself, the 43-year-old actor got up on stage to present a clip from his movie Beasts of No Nation and said, “Welcome to diverse TV.”
At that point in the show, six out of eight awards presented during the broadcast so far went to a diverse mix of actors.
Idris won two awards for his movie Beasts of No Nation and his television series Luther, Viola Davis won for How to Get Away with Murder, Queen Latifah won for her television movie Bessie, Uzo Aduba won for Orange Is the New Black, and the full cast of that series won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
It seems like the actors are using the award show as their statement toward the Oscars diversity issue. The voting period ended on January 29, two weeks after the Oscar nominations were announced and zero diverse actors were nominated.
