Jim Carrey Deletes Facebook Page Because of Russia

Jim Carrey has deleted his Facebook account and is urging others to do the same.

The 56-year-old actor took to Twitter on Tuesday (February 6) to explain to fans.

“I’m dumping my @facebook stock and deleting my page because @facebook profited from Russian interference in our elections and they’re still not doing enough to stop it,” he wrote. “I encourage all other investors who care about our future to do the same. #unfriendfacebook”

Other Facebook investors and former executives have been bashing the platform as well, as there have been reports that Russian actors used the social network company to spread fake news during the 2016 U.S. elections, and bought ads that were intended to support the election of Donald Trump and cause divisions among the American public.

“We must encourage more oversight by the owners of these social media platforms,” Jim told CNBC in a statement. “This easy access has to be more responsibly handled. What we need now are activist investors to send a message that responsible oversight is needed. What the world needs now is capitalism with a conscience. … [Social media has] created cyber-bridges over which those who do not have our best interest in mind can cross and we are allowing it.”
