Blu-Ray and Digital HD Releases

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Fox’s X-Men series comes to an end in today’s release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix which comes out on Blu-Ray and Digital HD.

Reprising their roles from Apocalypse, Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence team up in this super hero adaption of the Dark Phoenix Saga storyline from the popular X-Men comics. This time the X-Men are called to respond to a distress call from space to save some astronauts from a mysterious force. A terrible accident causes Jean Grey to transform into one of the most powerful and destructive mutants, Dark Phoenix. As she loses control, the X-Men must unite to help stop their former teammate.

The home release provides a solid 4K presentation with a great Atmos audio soundtrack. Extras include a 5-part featurette on the making of the film, along with the usual deleted scenes, commentary, and a tutorial by Beast on how to fly a jet into space.

During it’s theatrical release, the film received some brutal reviews. While this installment may not be the best X-Men in the series, it’s nevertheless entertaining especially if you love the X-Men. There’s even some tongue-in-cheek references to Disney’s acquisition as we literally see the Mutant Containment Unit or “MCU” trying to capture the team.

If anything, the film signifies the end for this series before formally being introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pure scope and depth of the Dark Phoenix saga is a huge undertaking, which the film suffers from the weight of the story. Nevertheless, the film has its moments including a shocking death and some decent action sequences. There’s enough here to take a gander and is by far not the worst one in the series and is worth taking a look for any X-Men fan.
