'Waves' Stars Sterling K. Brown & Renee Elise Goldsberry Only Have Praise for Kanye West

Sterling K. Brown and Waves co-star Renee Elise Goldsberry pose for a photo at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Coversations event for their movie on Friday (November 1) in Los Angeles.

The actors also did a Deadline Contenders panel the next day, where they praised Kanye West for providing music to the film.

“Bless his heart,” they both said. Sterling explained that Waves writer and director Trey Edward Shults provided music embedded in the script for the actors to hear while reading it.

“As you read the script you could hit a button, listen to a song. So the script had a song track to it,” Sterling said. “First time I’ve ever encountered that. It was awesome. And almost all of the music that was in the original script made it into the film.”

“Which was a testament to the film that Kanye, for example, gave so much music,” Renee added. “It’s beautiful because we get attached to the marriage of the music and the story and without the gift of their offering of that music we would have missed it.”

Waves, in theaters November 15, follows the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family—led by a well-intentioned but domineering father—as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.
