Queen Elizabeth Will No Longer Be Head of State of This Island Nation

Barbados is seeking true independence from colonialism, as the country announced this week that Queen Elizabeth II will no longer be listed as their head of state.

Sandra Mason, the governor-general of the Caribbean island, revealed the decision during the opening of the nation’s parliament this week.

“The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind,” she said. “Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State. This is the ultimate statement of confidence in who we are and what we are capable of achieving,” she added. “Hence, Barbados will take the next logical step toward full sovereignty and become a Republic by the time we celebrate our 55th Anniversary of Independence.”

Barbados is part of the Commonwealth, a union of the nations that were once colonized and ruled by the United Kingdom.

As the motion continues in the government, Barbados could become a full-fledged republic by November 2021.
