Marlee Matlin Looks Back On Her History Making Oscar Win in 1987

Marlee Matlin made history in 1987 with her Best Actress win at the Oscars.

The now 55-year-old actress was not only the first deaf actor to win the honor, but she was also the youngest, at 21, and remains so to this day.

Now, 35 years after her win, Marlee is opening up about the win.

Marlee spoke about the impact of the honor and how she was very shocked to win.

“I had no idea where the time went, I mean, it’s flashed by so fast,” she signed to Entertainment Tonight. “What’s most amazing to me, to be honest, is that I’m still here. I’m still here, I’m still working in Hollywood, probably one of the hardest careers that anyone could ever choose in their life, and I still think about those days of shooting Children of a Lesser God.”

Marlee added that “It’s still very, very memorable for me because it was my first film, my first everything in Hollywood and it stuck with me ever since. I still talk about it with my kids or anyone who cares to listen to me.”

“But it’s a very important film because it’s where it all began, where the door opened a crack and let me in and let us all in, and look where we are today.”

Marlee‘s brand new movie, CODA, is out in select theaters and on Apple TV+ today, August 13.
