Third COVID-19 Booster Shots Are Coming on September 20

Health officials including members of the US Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others, have released a statement with pertinent information about the COVID-19 booster shot, aka the “third dose,” that is going to become available for Americans who received doses one and two of Pfizer and Moderna.

According to officials, boosters will now be allowed and recommended at 8 months after your second dose.

The statement reads, “we are starting to see evidence of reduced protection against mild and moderate disease.”

The third dose vaccines, which will become available to health care workers and nursing home residents first, will begin rollout on September 20.

“Based on our latest assessment, the current protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death could diminish in the months ahead, especially among those who are at higher risk or were vaccinated during the earlier phases of the vaccination rollout,” the officials wrote. “For that reason, we conclude that a booster shot will be needed to maximize vaccine-induced protection and prolong its durability.”
