All 3 Men Found Guilty in Ahmaud Arbery Murder Trial

The three men charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery have all been found guilty.

According to the defense, they believed Ahmaud, a Black jogger, matched the description of a burglar in the neighborhood, and pursued him in pickup trucks before a physical struggle, fatally shooting him on February 23, 2020.

Prosecutors alleged the suspects pursued him with two firearms after they saw him running, and that Travis fatally shot him in a struggle over Travis‘ shotgun.

Each suspect faced nine criminal charges. Travis McMichael, who shot Arbery three times, was convicted on all of them, including malice murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony.

His father, Greg McMichael, was cleared of only the malice murder charge, and found guilty of the rest. Bryan was cleared of malice murder and one felony murder charge, as well as one of the aggravated assault charges. He was found guilty for all the other charges.

Lead prosecutor Linda Dunikoski said: “All three of these defendants made assumptions about what was going on that day. And they made their decision to attack Ahmaud Arbery in their driveways, because he was a Black man running down the street,” via New York Times.

Video footage of the incident resulted in nationwide outrage after a local prosecutor initially declined to bring charges.

Judge Timothy Walmsley has not set a sentencing date for the three men convicted of murder, via CNN.

All three men have also been indicted on separate federal hate crime charges, which include interference with rights and attempted kidnapping. All three men pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. The federal trial is set to take place in February. If convicted on the federal charges, they could face an additional penalty of up to life in prison.

The verdict comes after a verdict came in for the Kyle Rittenhouse trial.
